Dental Extractions
Whenever possible, the goal is to preserve natural teeth. When a tooth can no longer be restored to healthy function, however, extraction may be necessary.
General Dental Extractions
A tooth may require removal when extensive decay, a significant fracture, gum disease, or other damage prevents it from being predictably restored.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Lougheed Family Dental also provides wisdom teeth extraction when removal is recommended following a dental assessment.
After an extraction, different options may be available to replace the missing tooth, including dental implants, bridges, or dentures, depending on the location of the tooth and your individual needs.
What It Is & How It Works
The goal is always to save natural teeth whenever possible. However, extraction may become necessary when a tooth is too damaged or compromised to function properly.
Who Needs This Treatment
Extraction may be recommended because of:
Extensive tooth decay
Significant fracture
Advanced gum disease
Damage that prevents the tooth from being predictably restored
Wisdom teeth requiring removal
Benefits
Removes teeth that cannot be restored
Prevents a severely compromised tooth from remaining in the mouth
Allows planning for replacement when needed
Can be followed by restorative options such as dental implants or bridges
The Process
The dentist first evaluates whether the tooth can be preserved. When extraction is necessary, the tooth is removed and appropriate options for replacing the missing tooth can be discussed.
